The Veretta Uses The Feastrex NF5 Driver
The cabinet has curved sides in a "boat-tail" design. It is interesting to note that the front of the cabinet is not the widest point. The sides narrow in at the front slightly, which provides a better view of the wood sides of the cabinet from more angles. Besides the aesthetics, this also allows the front of the cabinet to be as small as possible, which reduces reflections.
For a quick note about my photos - click HERE The curved sides are instrumental in reducing standing waves inside the cabinet.
In addition, there are plates strategically located inside the cabinet that are used
to specially tune the cabinet to provide balance to the tonal characteristics of the
midrange/mid-bass. The port size and shape works with the internal structure
of the cabinet to produce a warm sounding bass that is unexpected from a speaker with
this size driver.
The midrange of the Veretta blends into mid-bass, which blends into
the bass effortlessly,
I spent many hours tuning and listening to find this balance,
One thing I've learned about single-driver enthusiasts, is that they are purists. The Feastrex driver and the Veretta cabinet are both designed to appeal to this type of listener, and they are both built to meet a very high standard of construction quality. A subwoofer to go with the Veretta? Ah . . . probably not! If you're a single-driver enthusiast, you're probably shaking your head in agreement. Design The cabinet design came about through the prototyping process of building, testing, and listening to cabinets of different size and shape with the NF5 driver.
During this process, I was comparing the prototype cabinet to a standard Feastrex designed cabinet called the F60, which Feastrex considers to be the best overall for the NF5 driver, and which I found to be reasonably smooth, but a little lacking in midrange warmth and bass output.
I found that a smaller cabinet volume seemed to work really well with the NF5, and angling the sides of the cabinet with this smaller volume made music much more exciting and lively to listen to. A smaller cabinet with the proper tuning, tips the balance between bass output and low bass extension as compared to the F60, and overall, the upper bass is much stronger and the balance between the bass and the midrange is more pleasing to my ears. The angled sides of the last prototype finally gave way to the curved sides, and as I fiddled endlessly with various baffles, ramps, ports, and padding, the sound finally came into focus.
Construction Construction quality of the Veretta is very good. The curved sides are made with six layers of 1/8" thick baltic birch that we laminate in our shop. All of the other parts of the cabinet are made of Baltic Birch plywood as well. Veneers are all top-quality, paper-backed, and sanded to perfection. I spray many coats of catalyzed lacquer finish to the veneer for a durable finish that will last for decades.
The Driver
The Feastrex NF5 driver is a full range driver with a factory-specified frequency response of 35Hz - 25,000Hz (+/- 3db), a sensitivity of 94db (1W/1M), and a continuous power input rating of 15W. More information about the unique construction of this driver can be found at the Feastrex website and by searching online. Accessories Grills are provided for covering the drivers. They are held in place by magnets imbedded under the veneer, so when the grills are off, there's no hardware to look at on the front of the cabinet.
I suspect most people will not even use these grills, but I thought I should provide them just in case. Grills are also provided for the port, cleverly held in place with magnets inside the cabinet. The port grills offer more than cosmetics, they can also be used to tune the sound of the speaker. Two different port grills are provided for each speaker, each offering a different sound to the bass. Leaving the port grill out completely provides a third option to the sound of the bass.
The plinths are made of Baltic Birch plywood, 2" thick for the lower plinth and 1" thick for the upper plinth. The upper plinth is attached to the cabinet and supported with three isolation points on the lower plinth.
Six coats of lacquer primer and a durable enamel paint were used to finish the plinths. The plinths provide superior isolation for the Veretta, as well as raising them up to a preferred height for listening.
A lead wire is provided, however I purposely did not install connectors into the cabinet,
instead preferring to simply have the lead wire extend through a hole in the bottom-back
of the cabinet. This allows the end-user any and every choice available for
wiring and connectors to their speakers. You can simply install connectors onto
the lead wires or install your own wires directly from your amplifiers to the drivers with
no connections at all.
